Marlee was getting all of her gear together on the porch. She had gone over and over everything that she needed a dozen times. She still had this niggly feeling that she had forgotten something but could not for the life of her figure out what it could be. Marlee being Marlee decided to just go on about her packing and didn't worry about it anymore.
Marlee heard someone knocking at the door. Grandma B was talking on the phone and didn't answer the door so Marlee answered it. "Whoa, now that's what I call a prospector if I ever saw one," she thought. But instead of saying, "Hello" she said, "Who are you and what do you want?"
The handsome young man held his ground and said, "My name is J.J and I'm here to see Grandma B."
J.J. casually leaned against the wall and said, "Well, Grandma Lu sent me over here to see if you needed some help on your Prospecting for Gold Adventure. She gave your Grandma B my great great grandmother's walking stick so you wouldn't get tired on your trip. I thought that was pretty nice of her, don't you?"
Marlee thought about what he had said and said, "Yes it was. Wanna come in?" So J.J. and Marlee talked about the Prospecting for Gold. He asked her if she needed any help. Marlee was once again a nice little girl with a bit of a bite to her tone of voice and said, "Why, are you offering?"
J.J. told her that he would be glad to help. "I'm older than you are, so I will help you carry all of our gold. Marlee thought, "Our gold?" but didn't say anything to him. They decided that they would leave the next morning if the Grandmothers agreed.
J.J. asked Marlee what she needed for him to bring along for the trip. Marlee showed him all of her gear. He immediately said, "Well, that's cool, but where's the food?"
"Oh, oh, oh, I forgot the food. I knew I was forgetting something! You go home and I will get the food together. We had better leave early before it gets hot outside." Together they made a plan. Just like Stashia was afraid of.
Marlee immediately went out to the porch and grabbed some of the snacks that Grandma B kept out on there. Some for the dogs and some for her. "Oh, bother, I'd better get that cowboy some too I suppose." Marlee never packs food without tasting it first. Sometimes you could just tell by looking at her little face that she had "tested" the snacks.
Marlee decided that cobbler and ice cream would be good on their hike so she put some of each in a sack to take tomorrow morning. She put the sack out on the porch next to all of her gear. There was another sack of fish sticks and waffles for the cowboy. He would have to share though. Marlee had been taught to share her toys and food with company and he was company.
"There is no need to pack juice, we will drink water out of the creek where the gold is."
*************
Marlee sounds quite confident about coming home with a bag of gold.
Can she trust that Texas cowboy? Can she be sure that there was "gold in them there hills?"
We shall see next time.
Oh, Miss Marlee so many lessons to learn!
