Natalie said, "Alright, tell me about this letter I was supposed to have received from this Charlie person."
So Grandma B told Natalie the whole story about Charlie seeing Natalie's picture in the magazine and thought that she would be the perfect photographer for Marleewood. She had written her a letter, but Charlie had not heard from her. However, she had found bottles of Diet Coke in the refrigerator, both full and empty. She was of course, not aware of what Grandma Lu had found there since she had been gone.
Natalie just chuckled and said, "I didn't receive any letter from anyone named Charlie. I'm sorry that you made this long trip for nothing."
"B" was disappointed, but told her new friend that the trip had two (2) reasons, one (1) was to hopefully find her and ask her about the letter, but the other reason was to get some help in qualifying for the big race.
Natalie asked her what kind of car she had and if it met the regulations that NASCAR had in place.
Grandma B said that she had a 2005 Mustang Mystic Cobra. She told her that she knew of only two NASCAR regulations that were required. Natalie's eyes got big and said, "Oh you can't go on a race track with that car, that takes a Special Vehicle Team to paint a car like that. What a lucky lady you are. There are only about a thousand people that ever got to own a car like you have. It would get totally ruined on the track, Kidddo."
She patted Grandma B's hand when she saw little tears run down Grandma B's cheeks. "Oh, I'm so sorry, but there are pages of regulations and rules that you aren't aware of. You can't try out for the "500" I'm afraid."
But, in the short time she had known her, Natalie really liked "B". She said, "Would you like to go down to the Pit with me? I'll show you around and you can get up close to some of the crew and maybe some big drivers. Maybe even watch a round or two of drivers try out. What do you think?"
"B"'s tears were of both disappointment and excitement. She wouldn't get to try out, but as a very close second she was going to get in the thick of things. Something that she had always wanted to do.
Of course, she yelled "Yes Yes. Yes. Thank you so much. Can I wear my pink Mustang sweater? Do you mind if I call Marlee and her parents? Do you mind if I call Grandma Lu and tell her about you first? Then I sure would love to go with you." Grandma B was talking so fast she again was getting out of breath.
Natalie chuckled and said, "Of course, you go make your calls then we will go."
While Grandma B was outside making her calls, Natalie quickly made a call of her own. It was even more important than Grandma B's; it was urgent!
Grandma B got to do 2 out of 3 things that she wanted to do. Not bad, do you think?
