It was so bitterly cold in Marlee's small hometown this winter. The terrible snowstorm had them all snowed in out at Mrs. Liz's farm. That ended up being fun for them all. But now there was no snow, just so cold it was dangerous to go outside. There was no school for the older children because it was so cold. It was even too cold to go outside to play. Marlee was bored. She had heard that word someplace before. Oh I know where. Grandma Lu said that once out at the farm when the children were tired of being stuck in the house. She said, "Oh you children. You all act like you are bored to death. Good grief when I was little I had terrible cold winters and always found something fun to do." She ended up telling them a story about her mother getting caught all alone in a blizzard while teaching in a one room country schoolhouse.
I have mentioned that Marlee is a smart little girl and often picks up words that she hears from listening to others everywhere that she goes whether it be at home or out shopping and at cafes.
Today she was at Grandma B's house and was a bit cranky and acting out. She had gotten out all of her toys, but didn't want to play with them. She was asked to pick them up, but didn't want to. All she did was lay on the couch with a pencil and paper. She didn't even want to make a list of things that she wanted to do. She was bored!
Marlee's Grandma B is not one to sit still for very long. She had been watching the news on television. There was a silly man that had a Bubble Machine outside. He lived in a very cold part of our country. He was showing people just how cold it was. When he would blow bubbles they would freeze. That gave Grandma B an idea. She said, "Come on, Marlee girl. We are going outside. Get your hat and coat and gloves and boots on because it is very very cold, but I have an idea that will be fun. It can't last very long, but I will take pictures so that we will always remember what fun we had on a very cold day."
Marlee was always ready for an adventure and this sounded like a good one to her. She loved it outside. Soon she was all ready. When they got outside they didn't go very far out because it was too cold. She looked at Grandma B and grinned. She had her Bubble Machine. What was she going to do. Ha! They were going to make bubbles in the winter time.
Here are some pictures that Marlee can look at when she is a big girl. She will smile at the memories that she will have of staying at the Mini Farm when she was just two (2) years old. The Bubble Machine quit making bubbles soon after they started. It had frozen up because of the cold. The bubbles froze as soon as they hit the freezing air. They looked like a crystal ball.
They were outside only four (4) minutes before they had to go back in the house.
If you look closely there is a picture of Marlee making bubbles in the summertime with her Bubble Machine. She still had her boots on, but no coat, or gloves. It was hot outside in the summer wasn't it? Cold or Hot, which temperature do you like the best? Do you like Summer or Winter?
Do you think that someday Grandma Lu might tell the children at Marleewood another winter time story? I have a feeling she just might do that.
Now you have some work to do. How many times does the word "cold" appear in this story? I'll be waiting for your answer.
See you soon.
