Grandma B got the chickens when it was cold outside, so Marlee had to bundle up in her hat and coat and boots when she first started gathering the eggs the lady chickens left for her. They are called laying hens.
Marlee was sitting on the floor by Grandma Lu's feet listening to her visit with her Grandma B.
Marlee giggled and said, "That's why you have to be very quiet and talk soft to them. They won't hurt you if you are nice to them. The very first time I gathered some eggs I smucked one, but it was okay to eat. Our chickens lay brown eggs for us. Did your chickens lay brown eggs too?"
Grandma Lu laughed with her and said, "It sure would. But your chickens have a brownish earlobe and that means they will lay brown eggs. Some chickens have white earlobes and that means they will lay white eggs even if the chickens are black."
"It seems like to me there is a little book about chickens in the other room that I saw the other day. I think it was in the Daycare Room. I'll go get it and maybe it will show us some pictures of different colored chickens.
"Yes, here it is. It's kind of a grownup book. I don't know who could have left it here. But look, Marlee. They have a beak instead of a nose. The comb on a chicken isn't the same as a comb that we comb our hair with. That's the pretty red part of the top of a chicken. See their ears and ear lobes? That hangie down part is called a wattle. All animals have different parts don't they? It is so much fun to look at pictures and learn."While Grandma Lu was showing Marlee the book, the phone rang. Grandma B answered it. It was Bella's mama. She wanted to know if Marlee and her friends would like to come out to the farm. Marlee loved it there. She remembered being snowed in at the farm when there was a bad snow storm. This time would be more fun. Hopefully, Grandma B says that we can all go out to Bella's farm. They have goats and chickens and four (4) dogs.
Learning colors, numbers, and new stuff!
