The farmer's wife said, "No, she has been doing it all by herself. I think I know why she has been raising cotton. I think that animals are very aware of the changing of the seasons. I have heard that we are going to have a very hard and cold winter this year. I have a feeling the little red hen knows that and is raising cotton for her and her girlfriends to wear to keep warm this year.'
The farmer's wife said, "I'll tell you what, if you help me pick the cotton and help me take the seeds out of the cotton bolls, I will crochet some coats for those hens of ours. I think that is what the little red hen has been trying to tell us."
The farmer agreed. The little red hen watched in amazement. She couldn't believe that the farmer and his wife were picking the cotton that she had planted. They were helping her without being asked.
"One day the farmer and his wife came out to the farm yard with a surprise for the little red hen and her girlfriends."
They loved their new coats. Some were red and some were black and some were black and white.
The dog said, "Where's my new coat?"
The cat said, "Where's my new coat?"
Jake, the turkey said, "Where's my new coat?"
What do you think the little red hen had to say to her three friends as she clucked hello to all her girl friends in the chicken coop?
**********
The animals seem to show us the weather forecast, don't they? My son took pictures of the squirrels gathering nuts like crazy and the wooly worms we have seen are mostly black. I know these can be considered old wives tales, but there may be some truth to it. Helping others without asking is the nicest gift you can give someone. I hope you enjoyed this little version of the Little Red Hen.
