Catherine was so afraid. She thought that maybe the man didn't mean what he said. "Maybe I'm out here all be myself. I'm getting so hungry. He 'probly won't come back."
"Psst! Hey there! Lookie what I got. I got me some apples. Yer got ya some coinage? I be sellin' these pretty fruits."
Catherine started to run away, but the little beggar girl said, "Non, don't run. I won't hurt you."
Catherine stopped and started to slowly walk back towards the little girl with the beautiful red apples. Oh her mouth was watering. She was so hungry her tummy was growling.
The royal servant was watching the two young girls from the corner of the street. He motioned for the Queen's driver to bring the coach closer. He didn't want to scare the girls. He wanted to help them; or rather the Queen did.
The Queen leaned closer to the window of the coach and said, "Petite amie, come to me. I want to give you food and a beautiful home."
"Wouldn't you like to come with me and be warm and dry? I promise no harm will come to you. What are your names?"
The little girl with the apples in her basket bowed her head and said, "My name is le jeu de filles cRegan."
Catherine answered the Queen also with a bowed head and answered, My name is le jeu de filles cCatherine."
The Queen was amazed and said, "Well, what a coincidence. My name is Catherine as well. We shall all be good friends. Please get in the coach and you shall have everything you could ever wish for."
Little Catherine knew that was not to be. She wished to be at home in the country with all of her brothers and sisters. Mostly she would miss her father; le pe're. But she knew that could not happen. She would go with the Queen and motioned for the little le cRegan to join her in the coach.
"And so it was that Catherine and her new friend were to live in the beautiful palace," said Grandma Lu.
