Blizzard Party #2

Oh it was a party alright. My goodness. So many people, so much food and laughter. A small call for a favor to bring out a few groceries had turned out to be the social event of the year. It had not snowed this much for years and years. Marlee and her friends and family were all going to be part of making wonderful winter time memories.
The first thing that the grownups did was to help Mrs. Liz round up all the candles and lanterns in a place where they could be found easily if the power did in fact go out. They also made sure that at least one of the grownups knew where the matches were. Matches were not safe for little ones to find.
Then they looked to see what everyone had brought for food. The bread pudding was oohed and awed over. They couldn't wait to taste it. There were chips, loaves of bread, peanut butter, lunch meat, hot dogs, and things to drink. There was even an old fashioned coffee pot to put on the fire pit in case the power went out. Grandma B loves her coffee and so did a lot of other folks. You guessed it, Natalie and Aunt Nat had brought some Diet Coke! Everyone now laughed about the Diet Coke mystery. Someone had brought cheese and crackers, eggs and ham. Someone else had brought a case of bottled water, and fruit juice. Grayson's mom of course, had brought something sweet for him in case he needed it.
You should see the amount of blankets and pillows and sleeping bags that were brought in. Liam's mom took one look and went, "Oh my goodness, where are we going to put all of these things?" About the same time she said that, the lights blinked and blinked again and then went out! It was still daytime so everyone could still see fairly well inside the house.
But there seemed to be a problem with the children. They couldn't watch television. Marlee tried and tried to turn on the television, but it just wouldn't work.  Most of them had always had electricity. The grownups had brought their cell phones with them, but they needed to be careful that they didn't use them too much. There was no way of charging them because there was no power. One thing about not having electricity is that you never know how long it is going to be out.
Grandma Lu and Aunt Nat seemed to have formed a bond in just a few hours. It was like these two (2) ladies took charge and explained to the children just what was going to happen. The children paid little attention to the ladies and kept trying to watch the television.
Interestingly enough, Mrs. Liz took over. She said, "Okay, kids let's get our coats, hats, and mittens on and go outside and play in the snow."
She immediately was the favorite person in the house. It was a mad scramble for everything they had just taken off when they had unloaded groceries. Mrs. Liz had a method behind her suggestion. She needed to make sure that the chickens and their little goats were fed and had water. She also needed some air herself. She needed a bit of time to think. Mrs. Liz
had to call her husband to make sure he was okay. So she called him on her cell phone and told him what her friends and neighbors had done. He laughed and said, "Boy do we have good friends. Are you and the kids okay?" Mrs. Liz told him that the power had gone out, but they were going to be fine. He assured her that he would be home as soon as the roads were plowed out.
Grandma B and some of the moms and other grandmas were looking for bed and floor space for the blankets and sleeping bags, this was going to be an overnight blizzard party for sure.
Grandma B made calls with her cell phone to her son and Marlee's mama. Marlee's mama was going to have a baby any day now. She was very concerned about her. She asked her son to call some of the grandmas' families and also some of the moms husbands and family. She assured her son they were fine. Hopefully it would not be a blizzard, but just a heavy snow storm.
Auntie Nat had overheard Grandma B's phone call to her son. She had a granddaughter that might be able to help if need be.
Grandma Lu looked around Mrs. Liz's house with a soft smile. All was well.
I think Grandma Lu might find an easy chair to tell a story or two. It would be so much fun to listen to stories by lamplight before bedtime.

  1. Grandma Lu thought it would be fun to tell stories, but we will see in tomorrow's story that may not be what the children want.
