Oh Marlee was scared to death! There were two little holes in the silver tub she was hiding in. She could see how big the giant was. Just about then her stomach let out a terrible growl because she was so hungry.
"What is that noise? I know there is a little girl in this house."
The cook started putting food on the table for the mean old giant. "Here, eat this food. It was probably your own stomach you heard growling."
Eat the giant did. He ate and ate until he could eat no more.
When the giant finished eating he yelled, "Cook, bring me my magic hen. Bring her to me now!"
The cook quickly brought the magic hen to the giant. He seemed like he was in a better mood now that his tummy was full.
The giant loved his magic hen because she laid golden eggs for him. She had made him very rich.
He wasn't nice to her either. He said, "Hen! Lay! The magic chicken laid a golden egg. Marlee couldn't believe her eyes. She thought, "Oh my dream is a lot better than the book I read. As soon as that giant is asleep I am going to take that chicken home with me. We will be rich and I won't have to work out in the hot sun for money. Ha! I am having a good dream."
Soon the giant fell asleep. Marlee was quiet as a little mouse and quickly put the magic chicken under her arm. She ran as fast as she could. Down the beanstalk she went. When she reached the ground she went to town and sold the golden egg. With the money she bought some regular chickens, another goat, and food to eat. She was so happy.
Marlee was really happy when she went out to the hen house the next day and there lay two golden eggs. When she sold the eggs she put some of the money in her chicken bank this time. She thought she should probably save some of it.
The next day when Marlee checked the chicken house, there were four golden eggs. She was sure that they would be rich for the rest of their lives just like Jax had said. So this time she took all four golden eggs to town and sold them. She bought all kinds of toys and candy with the money. She didn't save any of it. She was so excited to show her mama what she had bought.
In the meantime the giant was really upset. He could not find his magic chicken. He stomped and tromped on the floor until the Cook was afraid. She said, "Why don't you play with your magic harp while I cook you some more food? That will make you happy.
Well, the giant might be happier, but Marlee was not. When she went out to the hen house to get some golden eggs to sell, the magic chicken was gone! "Oh no! What shall I do now? I have spent all of my money that I got for the golden eggs. There is only one golden egg left and two regular eggs. That's not enough to eat. I won't get much money for only one golden egg. I guess I will have to go back up the beanstalk to see if the giant has any left at his house. He is pretty scary, but I have to do it. I spent my money on toys, candy, and pretty clothes. I should have given my money to mama and not spent it all. I hope she hasn't spent the money I put in my chicken bank. We are sunk if she has.
I have had the same regrets that Marlee is having. Hopefully Marlee is learning lesson after lesson in the next few stories.
ReplyDeleteHahaha I do that same thing often. Its all good so you decide to splurge, then right after something happens and you need that money. Lesson learned for that moment anyways.
