The Cook Had Three Eyes

When Marlee got home, her mama said, "Did you get a lot of money for the goat? Did you get a dollar? Did you get two dollars, maybe five dollars?"
Marlee said, "No, I got something even better, Mama. I got some magic beans. They will make us rich."
"You silly child, you traded our goat for some silly beans? How could you do that? Now we have no food to eat and no money. You have to throw those beans away and go get a job weeding gardens for people. Maybe they will pay you in fruits and vegetables. You have to pay for your silliness by working hard so we have food to eat. Now get to bed you have to get up very early in the morning to find work to do."

When Marlee went to bed she threw the magic beans out the window. "I am such a silly girl. That Jax tricked me. I should have done like my mama said and sold the goat for some money. Now I have to work really hard in the hot sun."

When Marlee woke up in the morning, the sun wasn't shining through her window like it usually did. She could barely see through the window. She got up and looked to see what was happening outside. All she could see was leaves and branches. Marlee thought, "Oh the magic beans had grown clear to the sky. Jax really did give me magic beans."
She couldn't even see how high the beanstalk reached. It looked like it went through the clouds; so far up she couldn't see where it ended.

Even in her dream Marlee remembered that when Jack climbed out his window and climbed up the beanstalk he found out that a great big old giant lived up there. She would see if she could make him not mean like that one in the book. The one in the book didn't like little kids. She could see that by the mean looking pictures.

So she climbed out her window and started to climb up that big old beanstalk. She was getting tired and hungry. She could even hear her poor tummy growling. She had walked quite a ways when she saw a terrible looking house. She was starting to get a little bit scared. She remembered the book though. In the book the house looked more like a castle. She decided she would rather knock at the door if it was a castle. So Marlee changed her dream a bit..

"Aww, this is so much better. I know there will be nice people here. She knocked at the door and a mean looking lady with three eyes opened the door and said, "What do you want little girl? You had better scat before the Mr. gets home. He doesn't like little kids like you." And with that she stuck out her tongue at Marlee and started to slam the door in her face.

Marlee put her hand on the door and said, "Oh please, can't you give me something to eat. I am so hungry." Well, even though she stuck her tongue out at Marlee and had three eyes, she wasn't such a bad sort. She said, "Okay here's a cupcake eat it quickly."

Marlee hadn't had more than a bite or two when they heard, Thump! Thump! Thump! The whole castle started to shake. The Mr. was tromping up the stairs.
The mean lady said, "Quick, hide under the big silver tub before he sees you!"

  1. Well, I guess Jax was telling the truth. Those beans were magic. The pictures were fantastic for this story. Thank you Darrell for posing for the giant. You will see more of him as the story progresses
