"Be careful, Marlee. Don't yell at him like you did at me. He might not like that. Look! He's holding a weight in his mouth. I think he uses it for a toy. Careful"
Stashia was not to be forgotten. She had come along on this crazy adventure of Marlee's now only to have to rescue her and Cooper from this giant protector of this farm.
There out on a stranger's farm Stashia growled not softly, but loud enough to make Hercules aware that Marlee was her little friend and not to hurt the little ones. He should be gentle with Marlee and Cooper. Stashia said, "What's your name, stranger?"
"Hercules is my name. I am the protector of this farm. What are you doing here? You are trespassing."
Stashia told the big dog that Cooper had taken a wrong turn and they needed directions to get back on the road. They want to go to Florida so if you could point out the direction we should take, I would be grateful."
All Marlee and Cooper could hear was growling from the two dogs. They were a little afraid until they noticed that the dogs were becoming friendly. Marlee said, "See, Cooper? I know all about big dogs. My Grandma B had a big dog. Her name was Zoe. I called her Zoie sometimes. When I was little I learned how to share things. I would share my snacks with Zoe and she would go treasure hunting with me too."
Cooper said, "Why didn't she come on this trip instead of Stashia?"
Marlee looked sad and said, "Well for two reasons. Stashia has always been my best friend, but the other reason is that Zoe died one day. She didn't feel good and we never saw her again. My dad found her and buried her. I was really sad and said that it was 'no fair.' but my daddy said, that she wasn't sick anymore so I should just remember the good stuff and fun that we had together. He called it memories. I think that's okay now 'cause I don't want her to be sick, but I still miss her."
While Marlee and Cooper were talking a big man with a funny hat came walking down the road. Marlee looked up and started to giggle and said, "I think your hat is funny. Who are you? Can you give us directions to Florida? Why are you wearing that hat?"
The man laughed and said, "Because I can't find a pirate hat. I've looked everywhere. I want to go to the Pirate Parade in Florida. I thought I should have a funny hat to wear. I heard that folks wear costumes and hats and lots of beads. They have music and there is even going to be a treasure hunt. I think there are judges down there that will give a prize to the winners.
You aren't the first people to turn the wrong direction. There were other people that stopped here too. Nice folks, at least the driver was, but her passenger was pretty mean. I didn't like her much, but I felt sorry for the nice lady that was driving. Hope they make it okay.
There were three lady judges that already made the rules of the treasure hunt that would start in just a few days. There were several things on the list for folks to find. Three of the things were already on their way to Florida in the mean old lady's handbag; a gold chain, a parrot feather, and picture of a pirate....
I take my memories to bed with me at night so I can have happy dreams of my loved ones that I lost along life's highway.
