Luke and Magpie were looking out the door so they could see all of the campers that had pulled in during the night. They were discussing Marlee's Barbie camper that was sitting clear over to the edge by the charging pole.
"What's that little girl doing, Luke?"
"How should I know? I can't see that far away. I'm a little nearsighted you know."
"Oh do I ever know. You can't see the bone in front of your face."
"Is that a fact, well for your information you can't see much better than I can. We are both a little nearsighted, my feline friend, and color blind for that matter."
"Well, I can see much better than you can at night. So there! Cats like me can see very well when it's dark. All you do is bark when you hear strange noises. I can actually see things that are strange and boy was there something strange going on the other night. Let me tell you!"
"What was going on? I barked and barked and tried to wake everyone up, but I was told to be quiet and go to sleep."
"You are absolutely useless as a watchdog, Luke. I am the one that everyone counts on around here to keep this place safe. I've been here for sixteen years and you have only been here for a little over five years. I rule the roost around this place and don't you forget it! I actually went out to see if I could stop a crime. What were you doing? Barking and jumping around like a little human except when a deer comes into the yard. Who went out to protect our humans? Not you. You just sat there and didn't make a peep. Me? I went right out there and explained to her that she needed to go back to the woods."
"And another thing. You have to understand gifts to humans are good. Take for instance the chipmunks that I bring in the house. The lady human just loves it because she gets all excited and starts yelling and dancing all around. See I make her happy. What do you do to make her happy, huh? Anyway now listen to me. I nipped the crook's ankle a little; got him good. Then I scratched him too. You should have heard him yell. Served him right. He was trying to steal one of our trash cans. Can you imagine that? I scared him and made him really mad. He dropped that trash can and ran off, but he dropped something."
"Did he drop some meat bones or some toys? Maybe I could get a human to play fetch with me. Or take me camping. I love to go camping. It's so exciting and fun. Plus you get to sleep in a tent! I have my very own trailer and tent. I make my lady happy by pulling her on her ski shoes. She smiles at me all the time, I'll have you know."
Magpie said, " No, I don't want to go camping. I don't think the papers or pictures were anything important. I couldn't tell. The wind caught them and I couldn't see where they went. Why don't you go lay down and leave me alone now. You are such a child."

Tom Turkey was a bit puzzled when he went to Grandpa Jeff's house for supper like he always did in the late evenings. There on the ground was a piece of paper. It was laying on top of the corn he and his lady turkeys (they are called hens) usually were fed. He took his feet and scratched it away so he could see the corn. Tom and the neighborhood deer had their usual feast and returned to their homes in the timber.

Someday if I have a lot more "somedays", I will write a series called the Adventures of Magpie and Luke. I think it would be a best seller. They are characters! They live in Idaho and keep their humans on their toes.
ReplyDeleteI think children really love stories about and pictures of animals. It seems like the natural attraction is universal. I enjoyed reading it too!
DeleteI agree. We have two dogs. Each have their own personality with an "I was here first" dog and a "I am dad's favorite" personality. Gifts of moles of course. Thanks for reading
